Purpose Knocks, Will You Answer?

Updated: Sep 6

God’s purpose for our lives is all around us. If we look for it, we will find it. If we leave the porch light on in expectation, it will even visit us in the night through dreams. And when it comes to our calling, purpose often moves first without our request, hinting at God plans through patterns of targeted visitations which bring us face to face with our purpose.

One such window into God’s will manifests through interactions with strangers. I am referring to divinely appointed encounters which reveal God’s orchestration by the way a person opens their heart to your influence. Getting a “Hi” or “Hello” from a stranger is commonplace. But when strangers go from a greeting to telling you about their live problems, voicing their heart’s longings, unfulfilled spiritual needs, or life questions with you, you’ve got to realize that something bigger than social etiquette and congeniality at work. Furthermore, when those kinds of encounters appear at your doorstep repeatedly, it would behoove us to ask what prophetic significance this curious pattern might hold.

Let’s go deeper.

We need not define these prophetic “knocks at the door” as reoccurring in-depth interpersonal encounters alone. What do I mean? Well, if God keeps sending you visions, dreams, thoughts, ideas, or concerns about a particular group, we ought to take note just the same. In essence, we do not choose our ministry, our ministry chooses us or comes to us according to the counsel of God’s will. For whether it be intellectuals, artists, a particular nation or ethnic group, the sick, the mentally tormented, those ensnared by paganism, the poor, the rich, the financially illiterate or the finanically greedy—whoever God keeps sending you, that demographic is most likely your ministry, your mission, and the group for whom you ought spend the most time perfecting the heavenly message that God has given you. They knock because they have a need that only you and those with your particular grace and gifting can adequately serve.

For some this truth breeds a welcomed sigh relief as their longing for clarity regarding their calling is finally satisfied. For others, there is anxiety. “But I’m not ready,” they might say. Be assured that if they are knocking, God has given you something valuable to feed them. You need only look to the chef who in wisdom has filled the cupboard of your heart with nourishment enough for your particular mission toward those he has led to your door. As you draw closer to Him through prayer, study of scripture, meditation in the Holy Spirit, and submission to authentic Christian leadership, you will see an increase, zeal, and skill regarding your ministry. As you begin to pray for and do intentionally what you likely have been doing with various degrees of success consistently and without thought, more grace will be given. And when the floods of world events, cultural shifts, and spiritual battles arise, you will find yourself ready with a redeeming word and divine solution for the weary in season.

Noah spent his life building according to a purpose which came knocking at his door, preparing a prophetic vessel designed to deliver a group set apart for preservation and future glory. So have you—child of God and follower of Christ—been commissioned to be a resource of salvation of a particular group which God’s Spirit help you to know, love, and understand. In fact, it would be safe to say that the ones God keeps sending you—whether in the natural (ie. Acts 10:17-33) or spiritual realm (ie. Acts 16:9-10)—are the ones He has sent you to. And how will they hear God’s truth unless someone is sent to them (Rom. 10:14)? This means that you are necessary tol of God’s Kingdom agenda and an answer to someone’s prayer. Embrace that. Seek it from God. Believe it by faith against all moments of internal doubt and external opposition. Praise God continually for it. And fulfill God’s dream for your life faithfully with the help of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, may God awaken your heart to discern the purpose that is at your doorstep and the divine power that is in your hand to change the world for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Amen.
