Often featured in thrilling Hollywood movies, the ability to see in the Spirit realm is a real gift that God gives to some. Some may indeed misuse it, some may misrepresent it, and others may even be tormented by it, but this gift is not intended to be a life sentence of either being labeled as a “Bruno” or making a living as a psychic—which is a demonic perversion of the gift used by Satan for the confusion and destruction of souls. It’s all about who the possessor of the gift allows to be in control of it. Often called the “seer anointing,” this gift is in essence a mixed manifestation of the gift of discernment and the gift of prophecy mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:10 and is meant to be used exclusively for the glory of and in submission to Jesus Christ. Those who have this anointing have a special spiritual ability to see in the realm of the spirit in various ways and to ultimately receive communication from God for His purposes to be fulfilled.
WHERE DID THE TERM “SEER” COME FROM?
Seers were first mentioned in reference to prophets in the Old Testament. Samuel, the person to function in the newly established office of the prophet, was known as a seer (ie. 1 Sam. 9:9). Prior to prophets, seers were those with a special revelatory relationship with God which enabled them to communicate the will of God concerning a given situation. Samuel utilized the seer anointing as a means of communicating the will of God as a guide and check to the authority of the Israelite monarchy beginning with the reign of King Saul. Later, we read in 2 Kings 17:13 that prophets and seers functioned with a similar calling throughout the Old Testament, which was to warn the people of God to turn from their wicked ways in order to to please God and avoid destruction in accordance with the Law handed down by Moses. In the New Testament era following the resurrection of Christ, due to the abundant presence and influence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of all believers starting at Pentecost, the seer anointing is no longer exclusive to prophets. While it may indeed function differently in those who do not fall within the ministerial category of prophet, seers may not even be ministers or church leaders in the traditional sense. That is how near and available God has made Himself and the riches of His Kingdom! Now that the veil is torn, the revelation of His goodness and glory is available to all and through all who trust in Christ.
WHAT ARE THE MARKS OF A SEER?
First, let it be noted that not all with the seer anointing can see in the spirit realm the same way, but all possess a capacity to vividly detect or be made keenly aware of what is going on in the spirit realm on a regular basis. Some may detect by feeling, pictures, getting a strong knowing in their heart (sometimes felt in the belly), hearing either the voice of God or sounds indicating what is happening in the spirit realm, or receiving insight through dreams or visions in which God exposes the spiritual identity and source of forces operating in the orbit or sphere of that individual. Indeed Hebrews 5:14 reveals that all believers are capable of having their “senses exercised to discern good from evil.” This means that some may even detect spiritual realities by physical sensations, smell, sounds, or taste. In any case, seers live by divine design with their spiritual senses being more heightened and active than the average believer.
Knowing what to do with what you see and how to do it are the seer’s most difficult undertaking. For example, if I am praying for a child and I see a vision of the President of the Unistee States, does that mean that she will become the US President someday or that she will somehow come into contact or have a godly influence with the current President? And whatever the interpretation is, should I tell her what I see? Is she even ready to receive such a prophecy? What if you see a house on fire? Should you call the fire department or pray that God would dismantle the works of darkness which are destorying that person’s family, which is simply represented by the burning house? You can see how these things begin to get somewhat complicated as the seer seeks to please God with his or her response. Needless to say, successfully and skillfully operating in this anointing requires time, patience, restraint, study of scripture, counsel from both the Holy Spirit and Christian leaders, intentional practice and training, and much prayer. Above all, intimacy with God in your personal relationship will allow you to thrive and experience joy through the process of your development as a seer.
THE SEER ANOINTING IN APOSTOLIC AND PROPHETIC MINISTRY
Apostles and prophets generally walk heavily in this anointing by virtue of the utility of this skill in establishing strong, purified, and supernaturally charged faith foundations in individuals, communities, and nations. As we see in scripture (ie. Acts 13:8; 16:16) their mission to deal with spiritual atmospheres naturally entails encountering and dealing with demonic forces as well as working in partnership with angelic beings (ie. Acts 10:3-8; Acts 8:26-40) sent to enforce the decrees of heaven over regions, territories, and nations. However, unlike those who are not called to be apostles or prophets, these kingdom officers wield the gift of supernatural revelation (ie. word of knowledge & word of wisdom) more intensely, deeply, and with greater insight into the bigger picture (aerial view) of what a seer may detect. Furthermore, where satanic powers are at work, apostles and prophets are also equipped with a particular divine authority (exousia) for deliverance by which they supernaturally execute judgement against what seers may have seen but not been able to deal with alone through prayer. This is why it is wise and needful for seers to be connected to an apostolic or prophetic ministry, network, or covering.
As I write this, I am connected to both a spiritual father who acts as a covering for my prophetic ministry and an apostolic mentor who is being used to nurture me to prophetic maturity. One offers me priceless training, wisdom, accountability, and insight into ministering in the supernatural dimension while the other serves as my contact point to a vibrant and well-established apostolic network. These connections have enabled me to grow faster, walk in the prophetic with greater confidence, remain accountable in my witness and lifestyle, prophesy with greater accuracy, interpret my visions and those of others with greater ease, see in the Spirit more clearly, avoid prophetic pitfalls, and overcome mistakes more quickly. Thus, if you operate or seek to operate in the seer anointing, pray that God would situate you with such Kingdom relationships. They help you to become neither unhinged, corrupted, nor unfruitful in your calling. I will touch a bit more on the benefits of this kind of wise positioning in relationship to spiritual authority later.
ALL MINISTERS & PRAYER WARRIORS NEED THE SEER ANOINTING
The foundational role of apostles and prophets may call for a strong and continuous flow in this particular grace, but it must be noted that all ministers of the Gospel, regardless of office, have access to this gift and ought to desire this gift either to be in them or around them in the lives of mature, faithful, and committed ministry partners. Whether a particular apostolic ministry assignment involves the casting out of demons, the revelation of angelic activity in an area of someone’s life, unlocking spiritual atmospheres to host the manifest presence of God, or prophesying truth which exposes and dismantles the lies of hell, the seer anointing equips Christian leaders to pierce the darkness with the revelatory light of Christ.
The seer anointing is always accompanied by a grace to intercede powerfully as the receiver of the gift is enabled to prayer more directly and therefore more effectively for God’s Kingdom to dominate and expand through every revealed situation. This is because what happens in the natural is always motivated for better or worse by what occurs in the spirit realm. Thus, being privy to the latter enables us to address root causes, preempt demonic plots, and cooperate more effectively with heaven’s unstoppable roll-out of Christ’s dominion in the earth. The seer anointing helps us to do just that.
Evangelists will need this anointing as they contend with opposition to their liberating message of salvation, bringing sight to the blind with signs following despite persecution (ie. Acts 8:4-8). They will benefit from being able to foresee roadblocks, resistance, and opportunities, which will allow them to fashion more effective outreach plans. Pastors will need this as they counsel, shepherd, and inspire the body of Christ with angelic assistance into greater spiritual maturity and intimacy with the Father (ie. Jer. 3:15). With weighty conviction and boldness, they will be inspired by fresh visions to declare in every season that great things lie ahead.
Lastly, teachers will need this anointing to contend for the faith (Jude 1:3) in the face of demonic heresies while cooperating with God’s Spirit to establish Christians in the Truth. They will be comforted kn the midst of their studies, granted mind-blowing visualizations and symbolic depictions of doctrinal truths, forewarned of deceptive plots, enlightened to new strategies for Christian education, and refreshed in their childlike awe of God in the midst of their sometimes laborious biblical and literary studies. With captivating color, vigor, and authority, they will be used to bring believers into an ever-deepening understanding of scripture and sound doctrine. So again, whether a given minister is the one with this supernatural skillset or working cooperatively with one(s) who do, every minister needs the seer anointing to more effectively carry out the duties of delegated ecclesiastical post—especially in these tumultuous times.
FIVE KEY THINGS TO CONSIDER
So, as I have sought to outline above, it is good to have and desire spiritual (charasmatic) gifts in accordance with 1 Corinthians 14:1, which tells us to “earnestly desire the greater gifts.” Greater gifts refers to those gifts which are most helpful and effective for Christlike Kingdom ministry. And yet, if you have the seer anointing or are thinking of requesting it from God, it will still be good for you to consider the following. Seeing in the Spirit means 5 important things:
You do not get to choose what you see. You must be surrendered to being used by God to address, handle, or ignore everything He shows you according to His will, timing, ways, guidance, and purpose. To operate sanely, steadily, and effectively in this endeavor, one must have a solid prayer life, walk in holiness, strong connection to Christian community (ie. receptive to spiritual authority, inclined toward Christian fellowship, and accepting of moral accountability), and a strong grasp of scripture. It also helps to use as inspirational references the lives, examples, and ministries of Christian men and women who have effectively stewarded this gift.
If your gift is operating properly and in the right spiritual environment—meaning in connection to the right spiritual authority, ministerial network, and local church assembly, you ought not see ONLY demons or demonic activity. Angels are plentiful and ever-active amongst and amidst the daily activities of mankind, performing mundane and miraculous duties from behind the scenes to shape people, cultures, and situations according to the will and purposes of God. They are sent to serve God’s people by the command of God as we spread the Gospel and carry out our assigned Kingdom mission (see Heb. 1:14). They are also assigned to keep God’s people (those who have received or will receive Christ) in all their ways so as to prevent their destruction (Ps. 91:12). In other words, those who possess the seer anointing should be seeing or detecting angels as well as the sometimes veiled presence of Almighty God. Mature seers live in the comfort of knowing that there are more that are for us than against us even as they catch visions or impressions of defeated demonic actors in this world.
If you can regularly pick up on demonic activity, that means you carry a measure of power within the spirit realm that makes you a target. In other words, if you can see them, they can see you. Demons hate the Light and that is what illuminates your vision to see them. They prefer to operate undetected. Thus, when you operate in such a gift in service of Jesus Christ, you disturb their kingdom and the missions thy carry out in the shadows of individuals, families, communities, territories, and nations. This is not meant to scare you. You still have victory in Christ Jesus over ALL the power of the enemy. And if you remain onedient to Jesus, you will ultimately and always overcome any attack. I only mean to validate your suffering. For you will undoubtedly face attacks which test your submission to God, stretch your patience with the process of maturation, and force you to boldly confront the enemy through prayer and righteous action
This is one of many spiritual gifts, not the greatest of them all. The wow factor of being able to detect and communicate the fantastic and captivating realities of the spirit realm can easily cause someone to think of themselves more highly than he or she should (ie. Romans 12:3). And while God may use those who are strong in this gift to speak truth that may be offensive or off-putting at times as God reveals and deals with sometimes uncomfortable matters of the heart, no believer should be reckless in their delopyment of this gift. There is a difference between being aggressive toward the enemy and being scary toward people. There is also a difference between being confident in your calling and being arrogant in your ways. Therefore, perhaps more than most, it is required of those that possess this gift to be trained in humility, patient in their timing, accurate in their declarations, self-disciplined, and stably situated within relationships with mentors who can help that believer tame, sharpen their gift, and perfect their ministerial etiquette in a manner appropriate for their unique calling.
Love must reign supreme. In order for this to be the case in the life and ministry of a seer, he or she must allow the Holy Spirit to guide them through a continuous process of character development. Because the seer anointing opens listeners up to life-changing revelation, seers must remain transparent before God concerning their insecurities, hangups, prejudices, bad habits, and fears. Otherwise, you could be doing more harm than good, abusing the trust of your audience by attempting to sanctify your immature coping mechanisms and bad people skills.
THE SEER ANOINTING BELONGS TO CHRIST
Let these points of insight be both an encouragement and a warning. All anointings as are given for service. quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus Christ—which literally means “the Anointed Savior”—said this boldly of himself in Luke 4:18-19:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he
has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Later we read in Ephesians 4:8 that Jesus was the hero of Psalms 68:18 who “ led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”
So Jesus is one who bestows this and every gift upon men, women, boys and girls who exclusively for the edification of His church (1 Cor. 14:2). And any anointing we receive is a divinely measured manifestation of the anointing that is on a Jesus Christ Himself for the spiritual liberation of captives throughout the world. Thus, those who have the seer anointing must cherish, utilize, and steward it according to the desires and commands of our maker, master, muse, and model—Jesus Christ.
Be careful what you ask for. But if you’ve got the seer anointing or are led to request it having counted the cost, allow God to use IT and YOU to the fullest so that heaven can invade your world on a daily basis for the glory of His Jesus Christ. As long as you lean on and abide in Him, the benefit of having the gift will always far outweighs the burden. In the name of Jesus Christ, may God bless you and use you mightily for His glory through the power of the Holy Ghost. Peace to all those who read this and have received it by faith.
